Gene Haas founded Haas Automation, Inc., in 1983 to make the industry’s very first completely automatic programmable collet indexer– a gadget utilized to position parts for machining with really high precision. Designed to increase production in Gene’s own factory, the patented Haas 5C collet indexer was a big success, and over the next four years, the business broadened its line of product to consist of a large choice of totally programmable rotary tables, rotary indexers, and maker tool devices. Haas sells all over the state of CO.

In 1988, Haas Automation attained another market milestone, by introducing the very first American-built vertical machining center (VMC) to cost less than $50,000– a price unheard of at the time. The Haas VF-1 cost a released price of $49,900, and quickly became the market standard for inexpensive CNC technology. The first VF-1 models were presented in 1988 at the International Device Tool Show (IMTS 88) in Chicago, Illinois. The “V” in the model name means vertical– an industry-standard designation for a vertical mill– and business founder Gene Haas added “F1” to unofficially designate it as the business’s “Extremely Very first One.” That first maker was the foundation of Haas Automation’s industry-leading VF Series vertical machining centers.
